First, allow us to give you a virtual pat on the back. We commend any and all commitments to happier, healthier living. In fact, it’s what Sunny+Share® is all about!

That said, we’ve got some bad news. That weight loss strategy? It’s good...but it’s not enough.

“Weight loss” seems like a simple idea on the surface. Many people take an “eat less and exercise more” approach, plus a supplement or two thrown in for good measure. And while that’s a perfectly respectable option, these people are missing out on a big opportunity to not only amplify their weight loss efforts but to improve their overall health as well.

We’ll sum it up in two words: gut health.

Until fairly recently, science around the gut has focused on its role as the body’s digestive system. But more and more research is being done about how the gut affects other things, too—like your heart, kidneys, brain, mood, skin health and, you guessed it, weight.1

So, while focusing on “weight loss” alone might get you somewhere, focusing on weight loss plus gut health could give you a more complete plan of attack against those extra pounds.

To understand how, let’s take a closer look at your gut.

The gut: a look inside.

Your “gut” is what’s also known as your “gastrointestinal (GI) tract,” and it basically is comprised of everything to do with eating and digestion, from the swallowing mechanism in the esophagus to the digestive power of stomach acids, to...everything that happens in the bathroom. Your gut is essentially responsible for the nourishment of your body. You need your gut in order to receive nutrients and energy from your food, to store proper amounts of fat, and to get rid of excess waste.2

As we mentioned before, science is revealing that the gut is linked to more and more aspects of health. Gut health is thought to have a connection to:

  • Nutrition
  • Immune system health
  • Brain health3
  • Skin health
  • Mood
  • Digestive health (gas, bloating, discomfort, etc.)
  • Cardiovascular health4

These are a few examples, but there are more. We’re really only beginning to understand what impact your gut can have on your overall health and daily life.

Your gut microbiome

If you really want to understand the impact your gut can have on your overall health, then you need to know about the gut microbiome. The “microbiome” in your gut refers to the billions of bacteria that live there.

Some of these bacteria are good and contribute to the beneficial processes the gut is in charge of. Some of the bacteria is harmful, inhibiting these processes in some way. As long as your gut has a good balance of good and bad bacteria, your gut would be considered healthy. If the bad bacteria overpower the good, however, you could start to have symptoms of dysbiosis (an unbalanced gut), like upset stomach, reflux, constipation, or excess gas.5

Your gut and your weight

These gut bacteria can also have a significant impact on your weight, which means that understanding your gut, and working to keep it healthy, might help you drop the pounds more effectively.

How does your gut affect your weight? For one thing, your gut—and the bacteria that live there—make all the crucial decisions when it comes to digesting your food. What is going to be broken down, and what is going to be stored? What is useful, and what is waste? Furthermore, certain types of bacteria are able to break down certain foods better than other types of bacteria, so, without the right amount of the right bacteria, your gut won’t be able to break down foods effectively. This also means that your body could respond differently to different diets, depending on the types of bacteria that are more prevalent in the gut (e.g. if you have more of a bacteria that is able to easily break down fiber and carbohydrates, you could benefit from including those things in your diet).6

Some of the bacteria in your gut may also affect how full or how hungry you feel, or which foods you choose to eat. One theory, in fact, suggests that gut microbes may “manipulate” us into eating the foods that will help them, the bacteria, to thrive.7Gut bacteria also produce certain chemicals that create feelings of hunger or fullness. Feeling more full could lead to eating less, which could lead to losing weight.8

When you realize just how big a role your gut plays in your weight, it becomes pretty clear that focusing only on “weight loss” products and strategies simply isn’t enough.
